While the desire to stay afire for God is strong, there are obstacles that can hinder or extinguish the flame. One of the most common is complacency. I mentioned this briefly in the last post. the gradual drift into spiritual lethargy where the passion for God diminishes as other things take priority. The demands of life, the allure of worldly pleasures, and even well-meaning but misguided pursuits can all cause the fire to flicker out if we’re not vigilant.
Fear is one significant factor that can stop you from being afire for God; fear of rejection, fear of failure, or fear of stepping out in faith. Many times, fear prevents us from fully embracing the fire that God has placed within us. However, the Bible reminds us that “God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and self-discipline” (2 Timothy 1:7). It is through His power that we can overcome fear and walk boldly in faith.
If the fire within you has diminished, there is hope. God is always ready to rekindle the flame. It begins with repentance, acknowledging that we’ve let the fire grow cold and asking God to reignite our passion for Him. David was a man who knows how to make use of this, he said in Psalm 51:10-12:
10 Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.
11 Cast me not away from thy presence; and take not thy holy spirit from me.
12 Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.
The apostle Paul encouraged Timothy to “fan into flame the gift of God” (2 Timothy 1:6). This is an active process. It requires stirring up our spiritual gifts, re-engaging in the practices that drew us close to God, and stepping out in faith even when the fire feels small. Activities like prayer, worship, the Word and what keeps you aflame in the secret place.
God delights in restoring the fervency of those who come to Him with a humble heart, seeking to burn brightly once again.
Do not let that fire die!
