In Matthew 25:1-13, Jesus shares the parable of the ten virgins to illustrate the necessity of spiritual preparedness for His return.
The key elements in this parable are; the lamp, the oil, and the bridegroom. These carry profound spiritual meanings that reveal what it takes to sustain a lasting relationship with God.
The Lamp and Its Significance
All ten virgins had lamps, but only five had extra oil. The lamp represents the Word of God, as confirmed in Psalm 119:105, which says, “Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.” This means that having the Word of God in our lives is fundamental to walking in His ways and preparing for the coming of Christ.
Interestingly, the Bible does not specify whether the event took place at night, it shows that it wasnt, this is because it wasn’t recorded so. If it were truly late at night, finding a vendor selling oil would be unlikely. This posits a deeper spiritual truth: the fire in our lamps—our spiritual fervor must never be extinguished, whether in the day or the night.
Our readiness to meet the Bridegroom (Jesus) is not determined by external circumstances but by our internal preparedness.
The Oil
What Does It Represent? The five foolish virgins were not lacking lamps or oil; they lacked extra oil. What does the oil signifies? Does it mean anointing? If oil signifies anointing, can anointing be bought? Not at all. While anointing represents being set apart for God’s purpose, it is not something that can be purchased in a marketplace. . Proverbs 23:23 gave us a clue, it says, “Buy the truth and do not sell it—wisdom, instruction, and understanding. The question then is, “Who is the Truth? Jesus is the Truth (John 14:6). And since Jesus is also the Word, this implies that we need more of Jesus for our lamps to keep burning.
The Holy Spirit is the One who enables us to keep our fire burning. The five wise virgins had cultivated an intimate walk with God, continuously fueling their spiritual lives, while the foolish virgins neglected theirs.
Spiritual Readiness is a Personal Responsibility
The midnight also signifies a dark moment in life when challenges can be overwhelming. That time when everything looks dark as if God has turned His back on us. Even Jesus went through it, why do you think yours will be an exception. All ten virgins faced the same situation; they all grew weary and fell asleep. This shows that challenges are inevitable. Whether as a student, a worker, an entrepreneur, a single person or married, we all face difficulties. The difference, however, lies in how we handle them. The depth of our knowledge of God’s Word determines how we respond to life’s challenges. Job 32:8 reminds us that “There is a spirit in man, and the inspiration of the Almighty gives him understanding.” The Holy Spirit is our teacher, revealing Jesus to us. But if we are spiritually insensitive, we may miss what God is doing in our lives. May this not be our portion in Jesus name . That is why we must buy the truth and sell it not. It also implies that it costs something.
A thriving relationship with God will cost you time, sleep, appetite, desires, and even your life. If your walk with God costs you nothing, you are like the foolish virgins; your lamp is burning now, but when the time comes to trim it, will you have oil to keep it burning?
The Fire Must Never Go Out
In Leviticus 6:13, God commanded that “The fire on the altar must not go out.” This means there is no room for complacency in our spiritual lives. There is no excuse for laziness, lack of discipline, or unhealthy decisions that drain our spiritual strength. Being a church goer or even a committed worker in God’s house is not enough; surrendering to Christ is more than just an initial decision—it is a lifelong pursuit.
The five foolish virgins were advised to quickly go and buy from those who sell, this means that there are certain things that makes your preaching, the songs, the sermons, the movies they are supposed to be watching to edify their soul and sharpen their spirit man were not given attention to, and now they are counseled to pay attention to them, but it was too late. It is not too late now, sieve and scrutinize what you listen to, what you watch and what you say.Come and share with us those things that edifies your soul, but alas, it was late…The Urgency of Our CommitmentIf you have given your life to Jesus, hell has declared a state of emergency over you. The enemy is actively seeking to pull you back. But you must strengthen your decision to follow Christ by walking closely with Him daily. This is why we need Holy-Ghost Intelligence (HI); the Spirit of God teaches us everything we need to know about Jesus (John 14:26).John the Baptist emphasized this when he said, “I baptise with water, but the One coming will baptize you with the Holy Ghost and fire” (Luke 3:16). Notice how fire is connected to our walk with Christ?
The Parable in a Nutshell
The parable of the ten virgins is a picture of the Kingdom of God. If you desire an eternal relationship with God, it is only possible through Jesus—the Word (the lamp), which must continually burn with oil (the truth), made alive in us by the Holy Spirit.Your lamp must never go out. Stay spiritually awake, keep your oil full, and be ready for the Bridegroom’s return.
